For the Japanese, “wrapping” is not simply decorating something to make it beautiful or useful. Since the Jōmon era, the wrapping culture of this country has been developing over thousands of years, mixing the three elements of practicality, art and spirituality. White paper with the purity of the immaculate and the sensitivity of the person who created it, furoshiki (wrapping cloth) recalls the flexibility of water. For the Japanese, wrapping is the union of wisdom with respect for nature, it is a dialogue with the gods, and at the same time it is the word to connect more deeply with others through the exchange of invisible intentions. Based on the principles of Japanese “Shibori” botanical dyeing, I have worked by dipping each piece of paper up to 9 times at different times and with different forms of wrapping. However, the Japanese who develop these techniques on fabrics have managed to have compositions of up to 20 times dipping in dyes. My goal is to take cotton paper to this point in order to create compositions of layers and plant shapes.

When I started these tests with leaves, fruits and flowers from the vineyards of southern France, I didn’t know that limestone had a special composition for my creative process. It was only by opening my rolls of paper with grapevine leaves that I was able to question why all, absolutely all the leaves of each floral species in the area were dyers? I decided to go deeper and do the research about limestone. While plants must be high in tannins, oxides or mordants are main ingredients for the manifestation of colours and shapes, but the study of the minerals beneath them which is part of their growth, makes the experience of botanical printing more interesting. Limestone mainly composed of calcium carbonate not only provides an earthy mineral flavour to the wines of this area, but it also contributes with the pigmentation or enrichment of tannins in the trees, flowers, plants and fruits of the area. Becoming a natural and gradual mordant in each floral species. Everything is connected, all the flavours of the minerals including the limestone are immersed in each type of wine and in each pigment towards the cotton paper. The universe itself in this exploration is infinite and incredible. Botanical prints on French cotton paper from 1979.

Many of these plants continue to be used in healing rituals, motivating me to capture their 'spirits' or the living essence of the plant. My work focuses on exploring the biodiversity of my country's flora and conveying the energies these plants embody, fostering an intercultural and environmentally conscious dialogue through art.
